I do have a subscription to Time Out New York Magazine, mostly because of the hundreds of free events and other various listings. Last week’s issue did have a special cheapskate feature, which of course perked my interest.
One listing that jumped right out at me, was the free intro to improv class at the Magnet Theater here in NYC. Fully aware that they do offer this class to garner interest in their full 8 week paid course, I still figured Why the Hell Not and registered, and was excited to see an e-mail response from the registrar within one business day saying I was registered for the class.
Being a particularly nasty, hot day after the 4th of July, it was hard to pull myself out my nice air conditioning to attend the class, but somehow I managed to trek through the heat, sun, and holiday MTA schedule.
The instructor was Mark Grenier, and the class was capped at 16. Now, I am not someone who has any real experience with performing in the least however, I am a very outgoing, silly, person, and I figured this sort of thing would be easy and maybe even sort of fun.
The my fellow student did seem a lot more into everything than I initially expected, being a free intro class and all. I was a bit intimidated by people who obviously had previous acting experience, however, I’m not one to stay intimidated for very long.
Mark was just the kind of instructor you want for a class like this. He did teach the basic improv theory and made you actually DO things and participate and pointed out segments from what everyone did as examples for the rest of the class.
The class involved some beat making, ranting, yes anding, pretend party talk, and just a tiny amount of singing. Not for someone just looking to sit back an observe. Although, I do enjoy dancing around and making silly noises, it’s not something I generally do around strangers and did take a little getting used to.
If you are in NY, and ever thought about giving improv a try, or you just want to do something a little different, I would highly recommend trying this free 2 hour into class out.
Did it make me want to take the $299 8 week intro course?
Sort of, actually. But that wouldn’t be free, now would it?
